Largest-Ever Roster of Professional Cyclists, Including 11 Emerging Riders from the ‘Global Relay Bridge the Gap’ Cycling Incubator Program
Vancouver, Canada — July 10, 2013 — The historic cobblestone streets of Vancouver’s Gastown neighbourhood will sizzle with energy tonight as more than 190 professional cyclists compete in the 40th Anniversary 2013 Global Relay Gastown Grand Prix. This legendary race is a 1.2-kilometre criterium (circuit-style race), and is the crown jewel of BC Superweek — a diverse series of cycling races taking place each July in Metro Vancouver. The Title Sponsor and Operator of the Race, Global Relay, is a cloud technology company specializing in messaging and archiving services for the financial world and has its global headquarters directly opposite the Start/Finish line.
With the largest prize purse of any criterium in North America and a notoriously challenging course, the Global Relay Gastown Grand Prix attracts elite cyclists and teams from all over the world. This year’s men’s and women’s fields are the largest ever, with more than 180 competitors from Canada, the USA, Ireland, Australia, Germany, Italy, Cuba, Belgium, Eritrea and New Zealand vying for the podium.
Global Relay made a $1 million, five-year commitment to resurrect the long tradition of cycling in Gastown in 2012 by restoring a much beloved event that had not run since 2008 for lack of sponsorship. Global Relay’s revival of the race has delighted cycling fans, athletes and the City of Vancouver. Upwards of 30,000 spectators lined the streets of Gastown on race night to witness the exhilarating cycling action of the reborn race.
For Global Relay, investing in this world-class sporting event is about making a community contribution, while fostering a spirit of teamwork among staff members.
“We made a strategic decision for Global Relay to fully manage and operate the race, rather than just writing a cheque to sponsor it,” said Warren Roy, Global Relay CEO and Founder. “Working together on the Global Relay Gastown Grand Prix has had a massively positive impact on staff recruitment and retention, and given our staff a tremendous source of pride.”
Global Relay has also provided $400,000 in funding to the Global Relay Bridge the Gap Program, a cycling development initiative for up-and-coming Canadian riders which is designed to bolster the transition between the worlds of amateur and professional cycling. Headed by Canadian professional cyclists Svein Tuft, Andrew Pinfold, Will Routley, Ryan Anderson and Erinne Willock, the program provides much-needed funding, mentorship, coaching and equipment to help a new generation of select riders (aged 18-25) reach their national and Olympic goals. Eleven of the 16 Bridge the Gap cyclists will compete in tonight’s Global Relay Gastown Grand Prix.
